SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS

1954

Starring:  Howard Keel (Adam Pontipee), Jane Powell (Millie), Russ Tamblyn (Gideon), Julie Newmeyer (Dorcas)

This is a rollicking musical about seven backwoods bachelors, looking for wives in some pretty unconventional ways in order to help them settle the Oregon Territory in the early 1800s. Filled with great songs and unforgettable, energetic dancing, this is a musical to appeal to both young and old.

Both the male and female characters are strong, stubborn, and not so easily won over.  This creates great opportunities to discuss:

  • The evolution of dating from one generation to the next. (Is texting really dating?)
  • Marriage: “Love at first sight”, does it happen?
  • Would you marry a man you only knew for an afternoon?
  • What does it take to build a life of your own choosing?
